Policies

Clear expectations make better ice time.

These highlights help families understand the club’s core requirements. Only CanSkate accepts public registration; all other programs are by invitation only.

Summary only. Review the full club policies and the terms shown during registration for program-specific deadlines and requirements.

Club and facility rules

Participants must follow Connaught, Skate Canada, BC/YT Section and arena rules. A parent or guardian is responsible for children at the arena.

Registration and payment

CanSkate accepts public registration through Uplifter. Invited skaters receive registration instructions from the club. Fees are non-transferable and include a non-refundable annual Skate Canada membership fee.

Respect and conduct

Skaters, parents, coaches and volunteers are expected to follow Skate Canada ethics and club codes of conduct on and off the ice.

The essentials

Read these before completing registration

CanSkate families may register directly. Families entering any other program must first receive an invitation, then follow the registration instructions provided by the club.

Registration and payment

Normally use one Uplifter account per family. Skate Canada membership runs from September 1 to August 31; its annual fee is non-refundable and cannot be prorated. Fees and credits cannot be transferred between skaters.

Program registration is payable in full by credit card. Competitive instalments may be offered at the Board’s discretion. Unauthorized card payments and declined instalments incur a $20 service charge. Unpaid balances suspend skating privileges.

Changes, cancellations and refunds

The general policy says no cancellations or refunds after skating begins, but program-specific terms also refer to the deadline on your registration form. Check that deadline with the registrar before requesting a change. Approved switches are allowed through week two; late-entry prorating begins in week three.

Send refund requests in writing to the Board of Directors. Administration fees apply; Skate Canada fees remain non-refundable. CanSkate/CanPower refunds before the registration deadline deduct classes already taken. STARSkate Development and Junior Academy cancellations after their deadline are considered only for medical reasons. Documented post-secondary course conflicts are considered case by case; approved refunds are non-transferable credits.

Medical refund requests

For CanSkate, STARSkate, Junior Academy and CanPower, submit a written request and doctor’s note to the Board. At least five consecutive registered days must be missed. If approved, the credit is calculated from the date of the note until any return to club programming, less an administration fee. Missing only some registered sessions or using drop-in ice does not qualify.

Competitive requests are for prolonged medical issues that prevent all skating. They require a doctor’s note dated within 30 days of the injury or illness beginning and at least 20 consecutive registered days missed. Special events and scheduled cancellations do not count. Approved credits start after that minimum, ending when any club programming or city drop-in ice resumes. Missing only some sessions or using drop-in ice does not qualify. Credits are non-transferable and administration fees apply.

Equipment and helmets

Bring your own skates and helmet; rentals are not available. CanSkate skaters who have not achieved Stage 5, or who lack good balance and control, must wear a CSA-approved hockey helmet. Power skating requires a helmet, hockey gloves and neck guard.

Missed sessions and cancelled ice

Missed sessions cannot be swapped or made up in another session. Any extra session requires a paid buy-on for the full session, regardless of time skated.

Arena cancellations, mechanical failures and unforeseen circumstances do not receive refunds or credits; replacement sessions will be attempted where possible. If the club cancels a session because registration is too low, registrants may choose a comparable alternative or a full refund.

Competitive sessions and buy-ons

Freeskate fees cover ice only. Development, spin, group and theory sessions include coaching; individual lessons are arranged with and billed by your coach.

Buy-on steps: obtain your primary coach’s approval for the session and date; purchase “Competitive Add-On Session” from Uplifter Products and put the session in the notes; forward the receipt to [email protected]; wait for the registrar’s confirmation that you have been added to the attendance list. Current Skate Canada membership and available space are required.

The published prices are $20 for one hour and $15 for 45 minutes. Complete the steps at least 24 hours in advance whenever possible. If the session is full, the registrar will notify you and credit the payment in Uplifter. Skaters who are not pre-registered cannot skate. Repeated failure to follow the procedure can end buy-on privileges for the season and may incur a $50 administration fee.

Published limits: Bronze 30; Silver 26; Gold 24; Diamond 1/2 20; Diamond 3 18; Top Flight 2 18; Top Flight 1 14; BSG Open 25. Check the session listing in Uplifter for its maximum.

Volunteer requirements: confirm conflicting instructions

Competitive families (Bronze and above) have seasonal volunteer obligations. Requirements and fees are shown in the 2026–27 volunteer policy; partial completion does not reduce the fee. Current Junior Academy skaters registered in Bronze are exempt from required hours but are encouraged to help.

The policies webpage says to submit hours within five business days of season end and complete a separate acknowledgement form. The linked 2026–27 policy instead says 11:59 p.m. two calendar days after season end and acknowledgement through Uplifter. Ask the volunteer coordinator to confirm the applicable instructions; do not assume the later deadline applies. The PDF’s worked examples also differ from its requirements table.

Session requirements and promotions

Bronze through Top Flight sessions have published jump, spin and skating-skill criteria. The Director of Programs/HP Director gives final approval for promotions and may exercise discretion based on membership, session numbers and competitive records. Meeting a skill criterion does not replace an invitation or approval. Review the full policy with your coach before changing levels.

Privacy, publicity and conduct

The club’s policy describes how personal information and inquiries are handled and states that personal information is not sold, rented, loaned, traded or leased. Third-party websites have their own privacy policies.

Registration includes a publicity release for skating images and statements used to promote the club, its mission and fundraising. Read the full release, including the parent/guardian consent provisions. Skaters, parents and coaches must follow the club’s conduct rules and Skate Canada ethics; see the official documents below.
